• The Supreme Court upheld the provisions of the RTE Act

Aiming at an inclusive education system the apex court on Thursday upheld various provisions of the Right to Education Act, 2009. The bench consisting of Chief Justice S.H.Kapadia, Justice K.S.Radhakrishnan and Justice Swantanter Kumar pronounced the verdict.
The apex court ruled that the RTE Act would apply to all categories of private and public schools except the unaided minority schools and boarding schools. The Act requires all the schools to keep aside 25% of seats for poor children. The judgment would come into effect from today itself.

The Act would not apply to those institutions run by minority organizations and which do not receive any financial help from the government or the local bodies.
This Act is a good indication for our aim of 100% literacy. However, the term ‘poor’ has a lot of debate and confusion in our system. It would be beneficial if the executives do not stick to the complexity of the term and carry out the real motive of the Act.
