• Shiva Thapa youngest Indian boxer qualifies for Olympics


    Indian Boxers are making their country proud. Shiva Thapa (56kg) became the youngest Indian boxer to make an entry into the Olympics by getting to the finals today April 10. But Vijender Singh (75kg) who has already qualified, lost in the last-four stage of the Asian Qualifiers’ in Astana, Kazakhstan today.
    Shiva beat Japan’s Satoshi Shimizu 31-17 to make an entry into the final and also got the ticket to London Olympics.

In the first round he was down a point because of apparent aggression. But he manged to be stable and played superbly from medium range in the next two rounds to win big. Main points of his came through right straight punches.”
    In 2011’s World Championships a 19-year-old L Devendro Singh had booked his London berth, forming a link with Debendra Singh (1996 Atlanta) as the youngest Indian boxer to make the Olympics. But this record was broken by 1993-born Shiva.
    In the opening round, the Assam teenager Shiva, who was playing his second senior international event (he won a gold in the maiden), was down 6-7. But in the second round, he took a huge lead of 15-6, as he clinched the boxing match successfully.
    Congratulations to Shiva Thapa for being the youngest Indian boxer to embark on to Olympics. Surely he would gain success in London too.
