Tremors were felt in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and India, as said by the people on Twitter. High-rise apartments and offices on Malaysia’s west coast shook for at least a minute. Tsunami in Indonesia also put an impact on Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.
Later it was corrected by the US-based USGS to be 8.7 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey informed that the vigorous quake was focused on 20 miles (33 kms) beneath the ocean floor around 308 miles (495 kms) from Aceh’s provincial capital.
The heavy tremors have also been felt in northeastern and other region of the India involving West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Manipur.
Tremors were also felt in places of our country like Bangalore, Ooty, Chennai, Kolkata andBhubaneshwar as well.
Nothing much of casualty or any huge scale destruction of the property has caused in Indonesia.
Indonesia extends across a series of fault lines, making the huge island nation prone to volcanic and earthquake activity.
On December 26, 2004, an immense 9.1-magnitude quake hit the country, causing a tsunami in the Indian Ocean which killed 230,000 people, almost three quarter of them in Aceh.
