• Indian Railways to install GPS Devices in Trains to offer tracking on Google Maps

Railway Budget has made the right budget decision this year to concentrate on the ‘safety and cleanliness’. Slowly and steadily Indian Railways is developing for the better, as it has made a new announcement that the trains may get real-time GPS tracking system soon in order to evade the frequent-caused accidents.
As per the ET report, this real time GPS tracking system will be in combination with GoogleMaps and will be approachable through mobile devices and computers.
CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems), the technology arm of Indian Railways, has already expanded a GPS based solution in partnership with ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), coming up with perfect location of trains with 10 meters accuracy and maximum latency of 2 minutes (which is on higher side).
The application being combined with Google Maps, will be approachable by the common publicand passengers. This will be a great advantage for the passengers as they can get to know if and how much the train is late. There is no need for them to wait at stations for long hours, as with this real-time train tracker’s help, they can know when the train will arrive exactly at the station. It may have a 2 minute maximum error margin.
The main focus of this application is to have a real time checking on the trains, so that the train driver itself can track nearby or other trains crossing. Before-hand precautionary action can be taken if they think that there is a risk involved.
The Indian Railways is also anticipating that this application may assist them in doing systematic planning and scheduling of trains.
The GPS device will be priced at Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 1 Lakh on each train. In the beginning 100 trains will get this executed. The users can approach this app on Indianrailways.gov.in site.
Indian Railways is taking a wonderful step forward. Let’s see how soon it is being implemented effectively!
