It’s been quite a while since the Samsung Galaxy S was officially launched. As a matter of fact, it was first unveiled in the market on 2010. Back then, the smartphone was powered by Android Éclair v2.1. Thus, those who aspired to get their Samsung Galaxy S handsets running on Android 4.0 ICS will have no other choice but to express their disappointment.
But that feeling of frustration will eventually be replaced with excitement. That’s because Samsung has officially released its official ‘Value Pack’ update that will upgrade the said phone’s firmware to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We know what you’re thinking. Deep inside your mind, you are thinking that the said firmware update isn’t too exciting as you still won’t be able to taste the sweet features of Android ICS. Well, not quite. You see, there’s a reason why this update will be very meaningful to those who are still using theirSamsung Galaxy S handsets.
The truth is, even if the Value Pack update will get your phone running on Gingerbread, you will eventually be able to get a bunch of Android Ice Cream Sandwich like features like the ever-famous Face Unlock. In addition, the update will also be offering the ability to take photos while shooting videos. It may not be as cool as the simultaneous HD video and image recording that you can get from the HTC One X but it’s quite enough to make you want to update your Galaxy S. But wait there’s more. The ICS-like Value Pack Update will also be loaded with improvements that will eventually allow you to customize the font size of your apps. You will also be able to take advantage of the S Go Launcher Pro, a custom launcher that will allow you to change the style of your phone’s main screen and icons. There will also be a so-called Smart Receipt icon but details about this said feature are yet to be disclosed.
As of now, those who are interested in getting the said Value Pack Update for the Samsung Galaxy S will have to fly to South Korea. That’s right. The update is currently being by released by Samsung in its homeland and we do not know if there’s a chance for the other countries to get the said firmware update. From what we have heard, the said update will work on any Galaxy S models as long as the model runs on Samsung’s stock user interface. Still, it would be better if we could get a word from the Korean handset maker.
The Samsung Galaxy S is the very first smartphone to be part of Samsung’s famous family of Galaxy Shandsets. Succeeded by the Samsung Galaxy S II, the smartphone can still take pride of its 4.0 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixels of full screen resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass protection, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of ROM, up to 16GB of internal storage, 32GB of external storage, 5MP rear facing camera with auto focus and geo-tagging, front facing VGA camera, FM radio with RDS and 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird chipset.
