• Protecting cricketers from hamstring injury

Hamstring strain is one of the most common injuries among cricketers. This is caused by fast bowling, fielding and running between the wickets. The sudden burst of movement or quick change in the direction causes strain in the hamstring.
Cricketers should undergo thorough warm-up and cool down before matches and even net sessions to reduce the risk of injury. As a match continues for long hours and involves fast actions it is necessary for the cricketer to follow proper exercises and diets, keep their muscles warm and joints lose.
Strain can be avoided by regular exercises and giving proper rest to the hamstring.
The strains can be treated with ice and anti-inflammatory medication and sometimes pain relief sometimes are prescribed. Cricketers should rest until the injury is healed.
Zaheer Khan was seen getting injured during India’s tour of England. The cricketer pulls up suddenly which causes a lot of pain. Proper check-up should be done to reveal any symptoms. Minor symptoms like swelling, bruising and a restricted range of movement shouldn’t be avoided by the cricketer.
Bowlers face hamstring injury the most as they are involved in a lot of hamstring and knee actions and strains are usually caused due to a result of overuse of hamstring and knees.
Michael Clarke who had been out of the Australian squad in the One-Day International series and Twenty20 series against West Indies due to hamstring injury returned to the squad for Test series.
Even Sourav Ganguly was ruled out of Bengal for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy due to hamstring injury squad just before the start of Indian Premier League (IPL). However, proper rest took him two weeks to recover for the cash-rich league.
A team should also keep a physio who can address the hamstring injury properly. The hamstring strain needs examination as it can happen as a result of muscle imbalances and result in poor flexibility and dysfunctional movements, which the physio can look after from time to time.
Also, the players shouldn’t force themselves to perform well. It leaves the hamstring more damaged.
The symptoms are usually seen when the players are in action.
The best way to stay away from hamstring injury is to stay well physically and keep the muscles strong.
