• Kolkata police arrests Jadavpur University professor over anti Mamata cartoons

A Jadavpur University professor been arrested by the West Bengal police on Friday. The reason for his arrest was that he was engaged in the spreading of anti Mamata Banerjee cartoons on the internet.

Ambikesh Mahapatra, a teacher in the Chemistry department of the university was attacked by the Trinammol Congress workers on Thursday night when he was returning home.

Immediately, the next day the professor had to face the arrest. Now it can be speculated that the police works under pressure in Mamata’s reign.

It is interesting to note hereby, that the state has now acquired a considerable hold over the free space an individual enjoys in the virtual world.

“Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra has been arrested for spreading derogatory messages against respectable persons”

deputy commissioner of Kolkata police- south suburban division, Sujoy Chanda said.

Mamata Banerjee, along with her party, is once again in the news. Whether it be opposing the NCTC bill, or threatening the Congress, she is at the forefront.

One crucial point in this incident is the freedom of an individual. However, there is a grave debate about such freedom that hurts the sentiments or ruins the status of an individual.

There is one thing to question in the explanation given by the deputy commissioner that would the police force arrest any other individual who has been charged for spreading derogatory messages of any ‘other respectable person’ i.e. except the C.M and if yes with this promptness??
