Rumors from Taiwan indicate Apple could unveil yet another touchscreen innovation when it launches its next iPhone later this year. DigiTimes, citing sources in Apple’s supply chain is claiming Apple could use a new touchscreen technology that would make the new iPhone much slimmer than current crop of smartphones.
The technology, called in-cell touchscreen, does away with the current glass layer that houses sensors to detect touch. Instead, the sensors are meshed into the display itself, making the complete assembly much slimmer. Currently, Toshiba Mobile Display and Sharp are tipped to be the suppliers. Apple is sourcing displays from TPK and Wintek for its current generation iPhone.
The next iPhone (iPhone 5?) is rumored to be thinner and sport a larger display than the current iPhone. Apple is also expected to replace the glass back with liquid metal and add 4G LTE support. It is not clear whether the new iPhone will be announced in June or in late September like last year
